| [I] MS Word [message #288782] |

I need some help.
Usually, I can manipulate Word very well. (Forget telling me why I should
switch to something else. I have reasons for using Word.)
Up on top, the menu bar that usually reads:
File Edit View Insert Format Tools Etcetera
Has lost the "File" option. File has disappeared, and no matter how I move
the toolbars around, it won't come back. I've looked in the customize your
toolbar options...
Does anyone know where it wentand how to get it back?

I just Googled for this and found out that in MS Word 2007 the File Menu
is *supposed* to be gone. Damned if I know why, and I know it doesn't
help you I'm sorry (unless you just upgraded to 2007?). It does point to
not buying 2007 though :)

Well, drat. Maybe there was an update that I accidentally inflicted, or
something. I just don't remember doing it.
I don't want File gone! I've been functioning without it, but there are some
things in there I use, damn them. "Properties" being the most useful,
although I adapted by putting the wordcount feature on the toolbar itself.
Thanks!
But if anyone else figures out how to get it back, please tell.

Erm, 2007 is still Beta. There is no way to install this without knowing it,

I am quite sure, that you can customize your menu-bar. But I don't know
how ;-). You could try looking under Tools->Customize (or something, I
don't have a Word here at the moment). There is (IIRC) a register with
"Menu" on it. There you should be able to reinsert your File-Menu.
Or you could just try and delete^Wrename your normal.dot. But only if
you do not have any custom macros andsuch.
Cheers,

Oh. Okay. I thought you wanted help, but perhaps you just want sympathy. As
Sir Humphrey Appleby didn't quite say to Jim Hacker, "Just remember,
Minister, it's *your* word processor and *you* wanted it..."

Ah. This is what I want to do. Word is notorious for its
ease-of-mangling-the-normal-template.
How do I do that? I would ideally like my "normal" to be 1" margins all
around, 12 pt Arial double spaced.
I don't know how without looking it up, which I can do, but is there an easy
way you can explain here, or are there pitfalls that will mean reinstalling
Word and gods know what else?
I appreciate it.

Sympathy, AND help. Don't make me smack you, Richard. ;-)
Universities have made blood-pacts with software AND hardware companies.
This reflects the current state of the American university; in my last PhD
course, we talked of "this term paper sponsored by Pepsi" and we were
kidding, but only just.
Branding has crept in by way of the scoreboards at athletic events, into the
computer labs, and the dining halls.
I don't like it, but the universities are starving for money--at least, some
parts of it. The administration seems to draw its salary regardless of how
much the NTT and adjunct faculty get paid.

FWIW I did take the trouble to do a little research on your behalf, but I
can't reproduce this behaviour on the Win32 machine, at least not without
disrupting a game which, according to my children, has huge significance
for the future of world peace. And I wouldn't want to mess with the future
of world peace.
Anyway, using Google I found the following relevant Q/A on a Web forum, but
I make no guarantees about whether it's good advice:

(dumb guess mode)
In some of the programs I use, some menu options are only available with
a document selected or similar folderol. I know less than nothing about
Word, being a WP geek, but it's a thought.

Well, the first step would be to locate the normal.dot. No idea where
that is stored. Most likely in your home-Directory. Because I never used
a non-German copy of Windows I have to guess a bit: "Documents and
Settings\Anastasia\Local Settings\Application
Data\MSOffice\Word\Normal.dot" or something like that. [WinKey]+[F] is
your friend ;-).
The you would rename that file to "normal.bak". Or "normal.anastasia".
Or something like that.
Then you would startup word. And if everything went well, there will be
a File menu.
Then you set margins and fonts and safe that document as normal.dot at
the right location. Then everything /should/ work.

That is a risk you have to take. I think I reinstall Word once a month
at work.

I think it is, thank you.

I only have a Dutch version, so these back-translations may be wrong,
but...
Go to the "modify toolbar" dialog. Choose the second tab, called
"Opdrachten" in Dutch, which would probably be "Commands" in English.
You get a number of categories on the left, and you can drag things from
the right panel onto any button or menu bar. It would seem that you
should drag the "File" category from the left panel onto the menu bar,
but no.
Almost at the bottom, next-to-last in my version, is a category called
"Built-in menus". Choose that, and now all those built-in menus appear
in the right-hand panel as well as in the left one. _Now_ you can drag
the File menu from the right panel, not from the left one, onto the menu
bar.
If that doesn't work, you have a different version from Word than mine.

It didn't, but nonetheless helped me solve the problem. It was the area I
had been messing with, trying to fix it. Your suggestions had me looking for
the built-in menu optoin, which I don't have. However, in the toolbar tab of
the same dialogue, there's a list with checkboxes. I highlighted "menu bar",
and a "Reset" button came online, from being greyed out.
I rest, it saved the changes to normal.dot, and my file menu came back.
Big hug!
Thanks, Richard and everyone else. That has been bugging me for a week, at
least.

It would have been helpful to know which version of
Word you're using.

I have Word 2002, running on XP, and the menu and toolbar
customisation is a candidate for the most buggy feature I have ever
encountered in a Microsoft product (yes, really). You change one thing
in the menu or toolbars, and half the time Word will randomly change
(probably delete) something else. I learned very early on that you
always back up normal.dot after successfully making any change at all.
That said, my normal.dot is extensively customised, and it could be a
lot of fun for someone else with a version of Word in which templates
are compatible with those of Word 2002 to try mine out for a drive.
Adrian.
